Highlights

Steilacoom Apple Squeeze
Steilacoom celebrates the apple with a family-friendly festival featuring pioneer craft and apple-related food booths (fresh apple pie, apple butter on bread, caramel apples, apple fritters, cold and hot cider). Children’s activities will include games, a pumpkin walk, pumpkin painting and pony rides. Live music throughout the day. Hand-operated cider presses, both antique and contemporary, will be available for making fresh apple cider from apples purchased at the event. For health reasons, apples brought from home are not accepted for pressing. All ages. 10am-4pm Oct. 1. Children’s activities begin at noon. FREE. Tumwater Falls Harvest Festival
Celebrate the return of the salmon and South Sound's heritage at this annual festival. Families are invited to make pioneer crafts, participate in salmon activities, enjoy heritage music and dance, and watch the salmon return on the Deschutes River. Other activities include petting farm animals and watching apples being pressed into cider by young people in pioneer clothing. Salmon dinners, food and crafts for sale. All ages. 10am-4pm Oct. 1. Birds by Toikka Weekend
For three days this month, the Museum of Glass will go to the birds! Internationally recognized artist Professor Oiva Toikka has created sculptures depicting more than a hundred bird species for Iittala, a Finnish design company. Birds by Toikka, each individually sculpted from molten glass, are collected worldwide. Special weekend events Oct. 13-15 include visiting artists from Iitala's Nuutajarvi glass factory creating bird designs in the Hot Shop while visitors watch, a Design Your Own Bird Contest, and Bird Abode, a family workshop 1-4pm Oct. 14. Other activities include bird illustration demonstrations with artist Bart Roulin, Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium live bird visits, and the introduction of the Spotted Towhee, Professor Toikka's limited-edition design for 2006. Bonfires, Beaver Pelts and Bogeymen. Celebrate Halloween in the style of past centuries with ghost stories told around a roaring bonfire. After following a trail of glowing jack-o’-lanterns, the music of a fiddle will lull guests into a sense of years gone by. Storytellers from the past will send shivers down spines as their words bring forth the spirits of the fur trade. The evenings begin with “gentler” tales and after a break for complimentary cider and cookies, stories get increasingly scarier.
