UP Fest 06
Puget Sound Parent and the City of University Place invite families to a one-day festival Aug. 5, beginning with a pancake breakfast and ending with a musically choreographed fireworks show. Throughout the day a variety of top-notch family entertainers will perform, including Tim Noah, a favorite children's entertainer, Eric Haines, presenting a family comedy show and Reptile Man, complete with snakes, lizards and turtles. Also featured will be a car show, more than 100 vendors and the Kids Zone, filled with inflatables, arts and crafts, a trout pond and more. 10am-10pm. FREE admission; pancake breakfast is $4. Get Your Kicks in 2006!
It’s time for the 59th Annual Pierce County Fair, a yearly celebration of rural life, agriculture and family values. The Pierce County Fair links an agricultural past with a fast-paced modern life through family education and entertainment. Visitors will find a wide selection of fair foods in addition to free entertainment acts and attractions. 10am-10pm Aug. 10-12, 10am-6pm Aug. 13. $5 adults, $3 children, $3 parking. Fort Nisqually Brigade Encampment
More than 100 volunteers will recreate the 1855 arrival of fur brigades from east of the mountains to this Hudson’s Bay Company post. Activities include fur trappers’ races, an elegant ladies’ tea and dancing to the music of bagpipes. As part of the popular “Engage for the Day” program, kids will sign on as honorary apprentices with the Hudson’s Bay Company and learn about skills such as starting a fire with flint and steel, blacksmithing and spinning wool. Babies are Okay Matinees
Moms and Dads with babies are invited to enjoy theater movies without worrying about a crying baby disturbing other patrons. The volume and lights will be baby friendly during the special screenings. Hershey's Cocoa Classic
Hershey's invites youth ages 8-18 to create their own brownies, cookies or bars, and enter them in a contest at county fairs throughout the state. The treats must be made from scratch, include a minimum of 1/4 cup Hershey's Baking Chips, and if chocolate icing or drizzle is part of the recipe, must include Hershey's cocoa. Recipes listing all ingredients, preparation instructions and recipe author must be submitted. First, second and third place winners will receive prizes. For contest information, participants should contact their local county fair. The contest will be held at the Pierce County, Southwest Washington and Kitsap County Fairs.

Gig Harbor Shuttle

Summer Adventure Passport
REI stores are offering a free pint-sized book to children, toddlers to preteens, featuring hikes, bike rides, swimming holes and water trails only a short car ride away. All outings are free or low cost. Kids fill out the passport with photos of themselves and notes from each outing. Finishing at least three hikes is rewarded with a summer-end celebration. Postcards from YOU
In the PBS kids’ series Postcards from Buster, Buster Baxter makes video postcards of kids and families across North America. Now kids have an opportunity to make their own one-minute video postcards to submit to a video competition.
