Highlights

Ethnic Celebration
This annual February event honors Olympia's diverse cultural communities with sensations for the eyes, ears and palate. Features traditional dance and music stages, demonstrations, an international marketplace, elaborate display booths and discount coupons to local ethnic restaurants. All ages. 10am-7pm Feb. 10. Come Play the Animal Way
It's Zoo Play Day at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium! Watch a gibbon play with a mop head or a tiger take a swing at a fire hose cube. Visitors will be invited to make enrichment treats for the animals and treats for themselves. Zookeepers will demonstrate how they provide enrichment treats for the animals. All ages. 10am-3:30pm Feb. 17. Included with zoo admission. $10 ages 13 and older, $8 ages 4-12, free ages 3 and younger. Pierce County residents receive discount. Hot Tips

All Access Night
Experience Music Project (EMP) and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (SFM) will offer free admission 5-8pm every first Thursday. All Access Night will include live music, featuring local artists in an acoustic setting in Sky Church. Visitors can enjoy a number of new exhibitions including Disney: The Music Behind the Magic, and Alien Encounters. For more information, call or visit the Web sites. Great Backyard Bird Count
During Presidents’ Day weekend Feb. 16-19, people across North America are urged to count the birds in their backyards and report them. Tahoma Audubon will coordinate four bird counts and welcomes families to participate. Each count will take place at a local backyard or park and will include a free meal. Missoula Children's Theatre
Children in first to 12th grades are invited to audition with the Missoula Children's Theater in several locations this month. Fifty children at each location will be chosen; no prior acting experience is necessary. Training is free, but a week’s commitment is required for those who are chosen. Hunt Middle School in Tacoma (253-571-2335) will sponsor The Jungle Book, beginning Feb. 5; St. Joseph School in Chehalis (360-748-0961) will sponsor The Little Mermaid, beginning Feb. 5; Washington-Hoyt Elementary School in Tacoma (253-571-2250) will sponsor The Pied Piper, beginning Feb. 26. Baroque Revival Exhibition. W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. The chill of winter will melt away when the Conservatory’s warm humid air mixes with the delicate fragrance of hyacinths, tulips and cyclamen. Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Visitors experience close encounters with tigers, sharks, polar bears, beluga whales and elephants.
